No Video after update to 3.7.3 101

After doing the update on my Dell Inspiron 5101 the system appears to boot as I watch the disc activity light. When it stops I can enter my password and it looks like it is functioning. My earlier kernal entry works normally 3.6.3.xx. Suggestions?

This is fedora 17 ? right ?

what is your 3d card ?

for example
if you have a nvidia card and are using the nvidia.run driver
then for EVERY kernel update you MUST reinstall the driver manually !!!
the same goes for the ATI/AMD .bin driver

if you are using one of the kmod-"driver-name"
then it is possible that it is just out of sync with the kernel
if so give it a few days to sync

welcome to life with fedora

Yes FD17

John, Yes I have FD17. ALTHOUGH i Have an Nvidia graphics I use the default driver. I could never get the 3D Nvidia card to work.
After installing the last two updates 101 -102) I have the "no video" prob. I tried ctl-alt-f3 to get to a prompt but the screen just blinks.
Don't want to update if this is what I can expect. Not sure if the next update will correct or be the same. Don't think a sync is coming.
Ron

fedora by default is using the opensource Nouveau driver and has been for a while now
fedora 12 or 13 i think was the change )

what do you mean by
" never get the 3D Nvidia card to work."

the open nouveau will run most cards mostly well
the nvidia.run and the kmod-nvidia will REQUIRE you to rebuild the boot image to remove the nouveau driver( the first time only to change from one to the other ) . This is very well documented , very well documented !

please see the fedora 17 nvidia install sticky on the fedoraforum
http://www.forums.fedoraforum.org/sh...d.php?t=280750

also keep in mind .That fedora is a fast passed "Research and Development " distro
you as the user needs to be prepared to be able to fix things that WILL break , and they WILL
fedora is a very fast passed development Operating system and updates can sometimes really mess up an install
Less likely recently the last few versions have been rather stable

this is life with fedora !
except it or use something else

but for a normal everyday update should not kill the video driver if using the nouveau driver
unless
unless you turned on the "rawhide" repo
rawhide is the alpha testing of the NEXT fedora
Right now that is fedora 19

or
are using RPMForge
and did not install and configure "yum-priorities" plugin

please post the output of
Code:
su -
yum repolist all

repolist info - No video

John,

I have been using Fedora back as far as FD11 and do updates frequently. Have had a few issues but were able to resolve them. In this case using kernals 3.7.3-101 or 3.7.6-102 I get the blank screen. I can see that it is going through the normal boot/loading process and I am blindly able to log in according to the disc light activity. I had tried using ctrl-alt f3, f4 etc but was not able to get more then a black screen that momentarily flashes a white screen.
The 3.6.11-5 still works and that is the repolist data below as I currently can't use 101, 102. Also I have not played around with Rawhide or any video files. My problem occurred just from a routine update ie: "su yum update".

Appreciate you assistance.
Ron

do not know what to tell you
other than try a few things
try adding "nomodeset" to the boot line
a kernel mod bight be misconfigured

read the boot.0.log ( should be that but might be "boot.log" )
read "massages " and "xorg.log "
there is an error and it will be listed in one of the logs

boot into run level 3
and use nano
add a 3 to the end of the boot line and finish booting
Code:
cd /var/log
nano boot.0.log
from a fedora 18 thread on fedoraforum
try updating authconfig
Code:
su -
yum update authconfig
