No titlebar, Minimize, Maximize, or Exit buttons
My system information:
IBM ThinkCentre PC w/2.8 GHZ Intel 32-bit cpu 1 GB Ram 40GB HDD internal Intel 82845G/GL integrated graphics Kubuntu 14.04 as only OS installed I've tried the command "sudo kwin --replace" from the konsole and while it's processing the command,the titlebar and buttons appear and then disappear. I tried a complete reinstall of the OS in hopes that would fix it but it didn't. I've installed it on other computers and this issue doesn't appear. I don't know what to do. I'm pasting the output from the konsole below. Thanks QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave. I'd turn off any composting, special effects.

To each their own though. Edit. I once had the toolbar disappear in thunar once. A cntl+m fixed that though. |

Get Lubuntu on those specs. It should be light enough to fly on that hardware.

I tried Lubuntu, but didn't like that.
I re-imaged the machine with the Kubuntu 14.04 and then found the settings in system settings > desktop effect > advanced tab to change the composite settings to use xrender and set the graphics settings to native. I logged out and the buttons all appear now. I thought everything was good except now when I click on leave, the only choice I'm given is to log out. I'm going to use konsole to shut down, but I'd like to get the options back for shutting down. I checked in Startup and Shutdown settings in the sessions management and the option to Offer Shutdown options is selected. I did get an error in Power Management. "Power management configuration module could not be loaded. Power management service appears not to be running." It said I could schedule it to run at startup in the startup and shutdown settings, but I couldn't figure out how and I need to leave. Any ideas on how to get the shut down and restart options back? Thanks, Ed |
Sorry, I am KDE dyslexic. I never got the urge to run it.
Like on this oldy but goody laptop with all my movies, comic books, music, etc......... Code:
harry@biker:~ Code:
$ inxi -r http://www.googlubuntu.com/ |
@Rokytnji
Thanks for the info. I picked kubuntu because of the distros I looked at, it looked more like a windows desktop than the others. It only matters because I'm putting these in elementary classrooms for students and the teachers need them to be as user friendly as possible so the students can use them without much help. I still have teachers asking me how to shut them down though. The antiX distro looks like windows with the taskbar located at the bottom and the menu button on the left, etc. I also found while looking at the review of antiX a link for Zorin lite that I will look at too. I'll try them both and then I will make the switch on the computers that I'm having problems with being too old. I would still like to know how to get the LEAVE options back on the computer I've been working on. Any ideas? I will eventually move to linux on my home computer, but haven't decided on the distro I want yet. My wife uses it more than I do and I have to get something that she can use without my assistance. ;) Thanks for your input...very helpful. Ed |
Well, I am kinda busy with testing on AntiX 14 i386 alpha 3. I have this old IBM M41 I am posting from right now
that has a XFCE distro that might suit your needs. The specs on this baby. Code:
biker@biker:~ User Friendly. The forum is friendly and helpful also and the members are pretty sharp linux users. http://www.mepiscommunity.org/mx Lots of helpful videos at that site and like I said. http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewforum.php?f=91 The forum is top notch. I think you will like it there. Mostly adults. Good luck with what ever you decide to do. Note on my readout while I am posting Quote:

Just another suggestion;
In kubuntu. what does Code:
sudo systemctl reboot Code:
sudo systemcntl poweroff Code:
sudo shutdown -r now Code:
sudo shutdown -h now I am a minimalist type of Linux user so I have memorized these commands instead of using a gui shutdown and reboot application. |
@ rokytnji
I used the last line of code to shut them down on Tuesday evening. It did what the gui shutdown would have done had it been there. I am off work these last couple of days so won't be able to work on the system till Monday. I appreciate your responses and the information you've given. These computers are for students who are too young to start typing code yet, but I have learned a few things so far. I like that the OS doesn't need all the resources that windows does to run. Ed |
