I discovered through much trouble that my USB was in fact bootable on the ASUS M3N78 PRO motherboard... it just notices the USB as a HardDrive in the BIOS after the bootable USB is inserted into a USB port and told to boot from it.
I downloaded a repair image file from:
formated a 4gig USB drive:
from a command prompt:
select disk # (whatever is your USB #)
create partition primary
format fs=FAT32 quick
and extracted the .iso file to the removable clean bootable USB (insert letter x: or f: or whatever)
Loaded the now bootable USB drive,booted, and did a windows repair from the command Prompt:
sure fixed my problem...hope this helps someone avoid a near heart attack...
