Most likly there is something very large in /tmp

Have a look with the following command:

ls -lhrS /tmp

This will list all the files in order of size. If you are running an apt based distro and have recently upgraded you can clean out the downloaded package files using:

apt-get clean

If the above don't help. Report back an I can give you some ways to track down large files.

The command that gives the used space is du

root@btd-techweb01:~# du -h --max-depth=1 /
5.5M    /bin
314K    /dev
8.9M    /etc
21M    /lib
2.5K    /mnt
9.2M    /opt
135K    /tmp
512    /sys
1.9G    /var
1.8G    /usr
3.1M    /boot
926M    /home
258M    /proc
11M    /sbin
1.8M    /root
16M    /server
4.9G    /

Next you can iterate through the big directories.
