No sound (Realtek AC 97 codes) in Mandrake 9.1

I recently installed mandrake 9.1 for the first time , and it did give sound when i unmuted the aumix along with Kmix , Yesterday i installed a fresh copy of mandrake again, this time i can hear sound from the cd player but Xmms dont work and gets hanged,
i tried it with other mp3 players and none worked, The sound drivers are installed properly and do startup + the arts sever also starts up but when i tested the sound using debug mode in the KDE control center it gives me an error saying "CANT SET REALTIME SCHEDULING Priority. You need to run arts wrapper as a root or setuid root.
This means you will not be able to produce acceptable sound.

Now what the hell this means ??? HELPPP!!! Please ......... and ermm i am using linux for the first time so please give me an easy advice, + i was unable to access root folder it

it means that you dont have *permission* to produce sound...

My possible solution (did a while ago some possible changes needed):

1 create a group audio, put your user in it.
2 set in /etc/rc.local to chgrp /dev/dsp and /dev/"something i dont remember" audio
3 reboot, or run rc.local

this might help since you seem not to have enough permissions.

Geert.

first, geert is my account, fill in yours.

log in as root

or

open a console, CTRL+ALT+F1 or just a terminally emulator.
type:
su
you will be asked for the root password (given during install, now you can do everything on the system )

addgroup is the default command to make a group.

So you want add audio, just type:
addgroup audio

there is a chance that it exists, so don't it is a kind of error when it does not work

next add yourself to the audio.
open /etc/groups. I prefer nano, you can take vi or emacs or anything that can edit text. (you must be root, so in X you must be logged in as root if you want to that with kate or kedit)

now add yourself to the line in which stands audio.
audio:root ==original==
audio:root, geert ==edited== (there might be ; as I am at school right now using M$)

also you might be already added to the group
open with your preferred editor /etc/rc.local and add to the last line:

chgrp audio /dev/dsp /dev/???=>I don't know anymore.
chown geert path/to/arts (so first find arts with whereis, find or locate, "whereis arts" at the command line)

now you should restart your kde or just reboot .

hope this helped. If something isn't clear just ask.

Geert.

thanks for helping but......

Thansks for telling meh all that , but i already found a solution, which is not perfect but still plays mp3s and cds only... Maybe this will help you at some other time:

To check whether artswrapper is running typein this cmd in the console

ls -l $(which artswrapper)

If you get this,
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root

It is bad. This is good.
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root

To get the s, follow these commands,
chown root $(which artswrapper)
chmod 4755 $(which artswrapper)

NOw i am going to try your solution coz i am not getting any event sounds + no sound during movies...
