no sound playback or video playback..on ubuntu 8.10

Ok first...I started with a buzzing sound after updated codec to play mp3 using amarok....i have uninstalled amarok to try and get rid of problem but it did not help....next thing i tried change from alsa to oss...i got halfway there and i could not install file:///home/thelastquincy/Desktop/oss-linux-4.1-1052_i386.deb.....so i;m halfway between alsa and oss...i've tried going back to alsa but still no sound now...and i can't even play video...i get this when i click on the master volume [The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured. You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu.]
when i go to preferences and sound to try and test i get this..audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 !audioconvert ! audiosample ! gconfaudiosink: failed to connect stream invalid arguement.....here's a pic of stuff this guy told me to do....http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...Screenshot.png....it shows commands and results...please somebody help me step by step on this.....i think if somebody could help through aim my USername: thelastquincy559 i think that would be helpful bc it would be instant notice instead of maybe 5 minutes...anybody and any help is much appreciated....

Russ Wenner mentioned a command to get sound working in Ubuntu in his podcast:
http://media.blubrry.com/the_techie_...ieGeek_036.ogg

Also, you could cut and paste from the terminal instead of taking a snapshot.
I believe the Ubuntu 8.10 uses pulse audio.

The last time I had the audio quit, I ran "killall pulseaudio" and then ran "pulseaudio --start".
It may be better to instead run "pactl" and then enter the command "exit". The press ALT-F2 for the run dialog and enter "pulseaudio --start" which will start the daemon if it isn't already.
I don't use Ubuntu but you may have the same command. The pulse audio device chooser applet is a program called "padevchooser"
