No sound on my HP with Mandriva 2006

Hi everybody. I have some problems.

For starters, I'm on an extremely low income right now; I don't even have an internet connection. I have to use the computer at my public library to post here--and it's a 45 minute walk! :)

Then there's the fact that my home computer said buh-bye to Windows XP for good the other day. I happened to have an old Linux magazine and three CD-ROMS lying around, so I just went ahead and installed Madriva 2006. :( I'm an aspiring (unpublished but hopeful) science fiction writer and I actually lost about half a chapter's worth of work there. Okay, I can reconstruct it, so that's all right. But the balance of the novel (about 120 manuscript pages) is in Works 6.0 format on floppy.

Actually I'm not sure why I bring that up just now, because my question for TODAY is how do I get the sound to work? Mandriva recognized my printer, so that's okay--but no sound! I can't listen to my CDs! :(

Also, as an amateur blues and ambient musician I was VERY pleased to see that I have the audio/MIDI program Rosegarden. :) But it won't launch! Presumably because the operating system can't find the sound card (which also has the game port used for MIDI). Bummer, man. :(

Believe me, the next time I post I will have the exact model of computer, the exact type of sound card, and the 2 processes or steps that seem to FAIL every time I boot up.

But it's a long walk home, so it won't be today. I apologize in advance for the fact that this is going to be a slow moving thread.

My feet are tired already! :D

You will need to provide specifics, but some things to check.

1. Open the volume control/mixer and make sure it isn't muted.

2. Make sure your user is in the audio group.

3. If these aren't helping, open a terminal window and try the command (as root) alsaconf and see if alsa can detect and configure your card.

If these don't help, provide specifics including the output of the lspci command and the lsmod command.

Okay, will do. :) Thanks, friend. :)

The computer in question is an HP Pavilion 6465 with a 433 mhz celeron and 96mb memory. In interactive mode during bootup I see these two items:
Loading sound module (snd-riptide) FATAL: Module snd-riptide not found. FATAL: Error running install command for snd-riptide [FAILED]

alsactl: save_state:1153 No soundcards found... Can't open /root/tmp/asound.state_tmp: No such file or directory. Setting mixer settings alsactl: load_state:1236 No soundcards found... [FAILED]

When I try to run the command alsaconf from Konsole I get this:

bash: alsaconf: command not found

I can provide more info if needed, but these would seem to be the pertinent items. Please help!
