No sound, no internet on Mandrake9.2

Hello friends. Finally i installed mandrake 9.2 on my computer, and now i can see my others windows partitions but new problems appear:

- I can't hear any sounds from my cds (cdrom drivers), and mp3 (hard disk)
My sound card is Creative soundblaster live 5.1. What can be happening? It seems like there's no problem but nothing sounds on the speakers.
Can be a change of module one solution? Anyone knows wich one can run ok with my sound card?

- My internet connection still don't run. I got a Motorola Surfboard 4200 cable modem in a USB port. i have seen the configuration and mandrake tell me: "unknow module".
I ask myself, are modules like drivers under windows? Where can i look for the appropiate module?

Hard to say without seing what you got loaded.
Please post the output of
lsmod
and
lspci -v

Yes, and no. All drivers in Linux are part of
the kernel, and they can either be compiled
into the kernel, or loaded as modules (on the
fly).

As for the specific modem: I've got one of those,
but I use it via Ethernet port. Never tried to make
it work on USB. However, look at URL=http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=1683]this[/URL] . HIH.

Cheers,
Tink[

Do you think my connection will go on if i connect the cable modem through a ethernet card?

...thanks

I know this sounds silly, but see if your mixer is set to mute. The easiest and most useful one to have is aumix (urpmi aumix). Its useful for all desktops. Open it with the command line. Just type aumix. Be sure that the master volume and the pcm volume are not set to minimum. Good luck.

If that's not it, then try to change the sound driver. That output from lsmod would sure be helpful...

I see you are here now.lol. lsmod is a command that you type in at a command prompt (as root) to find out the names of all the kernel modules that are currently loaded. lspci is a comand you also type in (as root) to get a list of your pci hardware (the plug-and-play output, I believe) the "-v" switch makes it verbose, so you have more info

snd-emu10k1 is the name of the module I have running my SB Live! X-Gamer. I believe sometime the audigy module gets incorrectly installed sometimes.

as for the modem. try CDCether.o(or so ;) . I worked fine on my usb cable modem. Just install it as a ethernet card.

This one is for Thar, Vectordrake and Tinkster. Thank you very much for your help, one more time. Finally i resolve my problems about sound and connection with your help. I think you can feel proud of helping others as you do.
Really the mixer was set to mute (stupid thing, but everybody have started with linux someday, and i start with it just a week ago and still don't know where some things are... )
The cable modem start to run when i change the module to the one you told me, now i'm surfing the net as a bullet.

Thanks, thanks, thanks.......:)

Thank you, mindatwork. Sometimes things really are smaller than they seem. We were all newbies once (I still consider myself one after 18 months). Now you can help someone else with this problem :D
