I installed ubuntu 9.04(jaunty jacklope) on hp dv4 1257tx recently.
When i started it i heard a cracking start up sound. Then i installed all the packages including alsa mixer but i am still unable to hear any sound .i also referred to some few threads posted in the internet but nothing happend .Previously I was hearing only cracked sound but now I can't hear any sound .Configuration of my laptop is
intel core 2 duo processor(t6400)
4gb ram
320 gb hard disk
altec lansing speakers

Can you plase tell me what audio drivers and what packages i need to install and how to use synaptic packet manager to install all these?
What is the audio driver for altec lansing speakers?

Just make sure the speakers work on another system, last cracking sound I heard was my speakers dying.

Incidentally, what else did you try? What posts? Your speakers really ought to work right out the box, so unless your speakers are mute, they're probably dead.

no my speakers aren't dead.It works quite well in windows vista.I reinstalled the ubuntu jaunty and now i am haring the same cracking sound.I think this is because of the slow frame rate or slow out put of the sound. Can you please suggest what package should i install to increase the frame rate?Or what codecs i have to install for this?

They're not seen as mute in Ubuntu? The thing is, they should work right out the box, but perhaps it does need something other than the standard drivers.

Try:
Code:
lspci |grep Audio

i used the command you suggested and it showed the following
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Actually i can hear the sound but it is not continuous and it is very slow
thats why it appear like a cracking sound.
please kindly suggest something
