No Sound in New Red Hat 9 Install
 

Ok. Brand new linux user here. (Red Hat 9) Going on about a day and a half now. I did a TON of reading and I managed to make it through the install and got the NVidia drivers installed.

Learning emacs from the command line was not fun. :D

Trying to figure out how to boot into a command prompt wasn't fun either. :p

I should probably call it a night before I get fustrated, but I thought that I'd post this before I crashed for the night.

I am not sure where to start really. I don't have any sound. Anywhere. My sound card is recognized as an "ES 1371 (AudioPCI-97) by Ensoniq," so hopefully that's alright.

How do I tell if the CD that I am trying to play is mounted correctly? I ask because when I open the CD player, it does nothing and the drive does not spin up. I tried to look at the CD in Grip and it just said, "No Disc."

So, it's like I said, I really don't even know where to begin. All of the hardware performs correctly in Windows 98SE.

If I have omitted any information that might assist you all in helping me out, just let me know.

The CD wouldn't happen to be mp3 would it? If so, you may not have the mp3 codec or whatever you call it. RedHat removed it with version 8, but I don't know if they re-added it with version 9.

Red Hat 8 and 9 doesn't have mp3 support

The Reason why Red Hat does not include the plugin for Mp3 is because, It's patented by Fraunhofer And for RedHat to distrobute it, they have to pay Royaltes to The German company. http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/amm/

But you can get mp3 support in Red Hat, its very easy just go to http://www.xmms.com/, dowload the mpeg 123 plugin and install it with rpm -Uvh <filename>.rpm, don't forget to configure your xmms correctly.

What CD are you mounting?, you can't mount audio CDs.... you can just play it... I recomend geting Mplayer (if you have Mplayer you dont have to get xmms plugins to play mp3s in Red Hat), it can play audio, mp3, video, avi, mpeg and alot more.... you can also use xmms if you dont want to download Mplayer....

also, this was my problem, make sure that the CD Drive that you are using to play the CD is connected to your Sound Card

Actually it was a straight audio CD (some old 311 actually), so no, no mp3's yet...

I actually determined that it was 2 seperate issues that was preventing me from playing the CD. First off, I have 2 CD drives, first is a Lite-On CD-RW 52x24xSomethin... and then a plain old Creative 52x CD-ROM drive. The cd player would query the creative drive when using the CD Player, and I was trying to use the Lite-On. Once I switched the CD from the Lite-On to the Creative, I then saw the CD Player actually play the CD, but had no sound from the speakers. I went and double checked that the wiring for all of the speakers and the sub were right and it turns out that it wasn't. Switch 2 wires and... TADA! I'm in business.

The only thing that concerns me now is why I couldn't play the CD off my CDRW.... Maybe the audio cable is the reason... Another problem for another day.
