I have had a problem with sound in my fedora 8 machine ever since I installed fedora.Ive tried Installing all the pulseaudio utilities and even followed a walkthrough posted in an earlier forum but to no avail. When I type pulseaudio -w to start the server the following error is displayed

[Cherub@localhost ~]$ pulseaudio -w
pulseaudio: invalid option -- w
E: main.c: failed to parse command line.

When I try running pulse audio from commandline, the following is displayed

[Cherub@localhost ~]$ pulseaudio
ALSA lib conf.c:1588snd_config_load1) _toplevel_:65:7:No such file or directory
ALSA lib conf.c:2849snd_config_hook_load) /etc/asound.conf may be old or corrupted: consider to remove or fix it
ALSA lib conf.c:2713snd_config_hooks_call) function snd_config_hook_load returned error: No such file or directory
ALSA lib conf.c:3076snd_config_update_r) hooks failed, removing configuration
E: module-alsa-sink.c: Error opening PCM device dmix: No such file or directory
E: module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-sink" (argument: "sink_name=output device=dmix"): initialization failed.
E: main.c: daemon/main.c : Fatal error. Default sink name (output) does not exist in name register.


Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have alsaoss installed? If yes, type "alsamixer" in console and scroll to "external amplifer" and mute or unmute it. That is the root cause for most of "no audio" cases IF you have alsaoss installed.

Hi there kumarkumar, I appreciated your help I would like to let you know that I downloaded alsa-oss and installed it. This did the trick and has reintrouced the joy of sound in my linux life. Pulseaudio seemed to be the rogue application and once I switched back to ALSA, voila!
