no sound from cdrom/kubuntu dapper drake

have a samsung dvd-rw lightscribe. i can put a cd in and it will play but there is no sound. i tried to install suse 10.1 on the same hardware and suse would not install, it would reboot before install completed. im not sure if its a hardware issue or a driver issue. since im new (very new) to linux i really have no idea how to locate the problem. i do have sound on my computer but not from the cdrom.

Did you go into the mixer and make sure the cdrom was turned up?

I take it that you have already made sure that you can get sound out of the cdrom with some operating system? Just to make sure that the drive's audio cable is connected..but besides that, check mixer levels. If you get no errors (just no sound), it's nothing difficult I guess.
