No sound from CD/Dvd. DONE EVERYTHING
 

Hello all, Im as new as a newbie can get. Ive downloaded all latest drivers from alsa. Including librarys, tools, utilities etc. I start comp and FC3 detects sound card. I let kduzu configure it. I have system sounds etc works fine. All volumes are unmuted. theres a cable between dvd/cd that is connected to sound card, so i thinik ive done everything i know about. HOWEVER..... Theres no sound coming from cd or dvd no matter how i adjust things. The comp sees the cd, realizes theres disk in it, and plays it in both cd and dvd. But no sound! Ive been at this for about 2 weeks now, and am at the end of my rope. I truly do like Linux and all, but Windows sure makes little things like this alot easier......Bummmed.
Would appreciate any and all help anyone could give me on this before i give up and got back to Bill's barn.

Gulp.....Me again. I just discoverd theres nothing in my alsaconf file, nor modules.conf, proc, pci. Should there be? If so how do i get what i need in there?? thanx

What does your /etc/fstab look like? Do you have a cdrom, or dvdrom group, have you tried adding your user to it?

Thanks for your help heres copy of my fstab. I think its ok but dont know for sure. Also how do i add "my user to it? Its still driving me crazy!! Have a look at /etc/group, if you have a cdrom or dvdrom group edit the file as root or su - and add your user to it.

Well, i did check that, and far as i can tell im listed. Any other suggestions? Im sure its something really simple. Ive been reading eveything i can find on this and so far no help. Or im doing something wrong. or it just wont do it. Maybe thats it, just cant play audio cds.
Im about to throw in the towel on this!!!!

The problem (I believe) is there is no audio cable connecting your CD player to your soundcard... EVEN IF IT WORKS IN WINDOWS! Sound strange, well it is. Windows does not use the audio out on the CD ROM drive it runs through the IDE cable (I believe). I know there is a work around out there somewhere, but barring that you should run a line from your audio out to your sound card. So if you are getting regular audio but none from the CD player, than this is most likely your problem.

Just a side note, the work around involves an individual program and not the system as a whole. So you might be able to listen to CDs with XMMS in the workaround, but DVD audio will not play upon viewing a DVD... so... if you plan on watching movies, you need to find a DVD player that will use some work around for a system setup for Windows or just go ahead and do the right thing and hook up the system audio like it should have been hooked up in the first place.

I do not know your sound card settings, but you need to unmute the CD-ROM or other mixer and enable external amplifier if there is one. Assuming you are using ALSA as your sound system, type alsamixer and adjust the mixer volumes.

There are some programs that does CD digital audio (CDDA) extraction what other people is explaining about. One utility is cdda2wav and the other is cdparanoia. Xmms has a CD digital audio extraction plugin, so if you do not have it, download it through apt-get or something similar. I think Xine has CDDA extraction and of course mplayer has it too. CDDA extraction takes some processor usage and you need to unmute PCM and set it around 75% to 87% and make sure all DAC levels (if there are any) are at 100%.

In Xmms all I do is click on the open directory. Then I select /mnt/cdrom. After that, it lists the tracks. If I enable cddb, it can gather information and display the information of tracks.

Do not mount the audio CD because the kernel does not have surpport to read audio CD disc.

BTW, artsd has problems on many systems, so turn it off.

I'm in the same boat. I installed FC3. Machine recognizes DVD, CD. I can burn data using K3b. But try to play a audio CD and nothing. I've tried installing..

("Xine missing mrl") Still in the maze.

Chem, more than likely you have the same problem I refrenced earlier, if you have no sound AT ALL coming from you CDs then it is more than likely your sound cable not hooked up... read my links.
