no sound as ordinary user

Dear All,
I have recently installed ubuntu 6.10 on my toshiba laptop. The first problem I encountered is that the non-root user you created during installation process could not log in in the X environment. Then I found that removing the user from the group audio let me log in properly, but I have no sound.
Surprisingly if i boot the machine as single user, recovery mode, as root sound and video work properly. I have googled this and the main problems is having my users belonging to audio group. This prevent them from loggin in in a graphics mode.
Any help from you linuxmen and women will be appreciated.
Regards

Put the user(s) back into the audio group, then try logging into X as said user and check your X log afterwards.
