No sound after update of Ubuntu 8.04

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on Toshiba NB100. Following an update about a month ago I now have no sound. A similar fault occurred after an update about 12 months ago. The patch I found on the Toshiba site doesn't work this time. Anyone any ideas?
I had a look at 10.04 and this time the sound was fine but no wireless so unfortunately this was no good as a solution.

Which soundcard do you have: lspci -l ?
Did the update perhaps install a new version of a kernel, and not include a proper module for your soundcard?
