Unhappy no sound after kernel recompile

I just added NTFS file support and recompiled. I made no other changes. Now i have no sound. I do have sound with original kernel boot. Any ideas?

you still have luck

if you are using linux, you may enter this command in the terminal:
/usr/sbin/sndconfig

you need to follow direction and answer these question, and look for the name of your sound card and so on

well i ran sndconfig and it told me my kernel does not support sound(can't locate soundcore.o). so i ran xconfig and it has the sound enabled for my card. i don't know what's up with this...

When you recompiled the kernel did you follow up with these commands?:

make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

Other than that, i've been hearing around here how much of a pain recompiling a kernel in red hat and mandrake etc. can be. If you do a search, i'm sure you'll find the same questions with perhaps the answer in here somewhere.

you probably forgot to include a module or two... make sure you have the isapnp module - sometimes soundcore won't load without it.

I had this same problem awhile back when I tried to update my kernel in Redhat 7.2. I finally just gave up trying to update it after awhile because I figured that I was just too stupid to figure out how to compile the kernel at that point and time. Oh well, I'm still a newbie and I've got a lot to learn.

ah Dayewalker... isajera seems to think otherwise... she sez that recompiling the kernel weeds out the linux sheep from the goats...

oh yea... and to be more constructive, did u do a:

make mproper

before the make menuconfig?

apparently i found that if u did that, they take off a lot of options for the make menuconfig stage... might have taken off the sound stuff. perhaps u could go in and check it.

my experiences are limited, so i might be saying something redundant. just trying to cover the bases.

Sounds like you missed some of the sound config options for your new kernel, check over the .config file in /usr/src/linux.
