Unhappy No sound

I am new to LINUX Mint. I loaded it a Gateway 4026 laptop. I can't get the sound to work. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Open a terminal window, su to root. If you've never done this before, type the command su then give root passwd. Now type alsaconf and follow the instructions. If mint is like Ubuntu give the command sudo alsaconf then give your login passwd when prompted. After alsaconf completes type alsamixer as user, (You don't need to be root) and make sure the volume is up. Use the arrow keys to navigate left and right, to unmute press the m key on selected item. To exit press Esc key.
