I just started using linux. I installed SUSE 10.1 on my computer. I have a HP desktop with an integrated "Realtek ALC 880 chipset" sound card. Suse doesn't play sound!!! the only sound i can hear is the one that comes from the small speaker in the cabinet(while testing the system bell, etc.). NO SOUND FROM MY 2.1 SPEAKERS! PLEASE HELP!
Run "alsaconf" to detect your sound card, if it's not detected. Then run alsamixer to set up the volumes. Or maybe you just need to set up the volumes as the default is mute I think. If you didn't install Alsa then check this: http://www.alsa-project.org/
i have the exactly same problem - HP desktop, Realtek 880 onboard soundcard, suse linux 10.1, NO SOUND. i tried to run alsaconf, and it couldn't detect any device to configure.
