No Screens
 
I just finished installing a dual boot of Windows 2k pro and Redhat Linux 9.0. The install went perfect, all graphics displayed properly but when I finshed the installing, rebooted, and selected linux in my boot loader the screen flickers a few times then informs me that X server could not start, shows me a log file with some lines like No Screens found and returns me to the login. I tried running the config but it does the same thing. I am really new to linux, thus is the reason I installed it, because I wanted to toy with it some but I am getting nowhere fast. Finding help for this seemed to be a daunting task. I often see people ask for a copy of the log file but I have no idea how to get it posted here. I am presently posting this thread in win2k. How would I get a copy of the log file to this thread in hopes that someone could help me out?

PS> I am using an ATI Radeon 9000 pro video card. It has 128ddr and tv out. It also has dual displays (but I only use one). Remember when helping me I am a complete newb so take it step by step lol.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions! Let's see what we can do about your problems...

Are you using a text mode login? That is, does the system boot and end in a text screen with a login prompt?

What config program did you use? If you can log in, try doing that as root, and then run
redhat-config-xfree86
(Or was that the config program you were using?)

Yes that was the config program I was using. It did some configuring, said something like trying ATI Radeon 9000 and failed when trying to boot X again.

As for text, well when I boot into linux it comes to a text login, flickers monitor on and off a few times, then goes to a blue screen informing me of X server crash asking me if I wish to view log, then asking me if I wish to run config program, after failure it puts me back at text login.

Note I get the same log info when I manually start X with startx at root.

OK. I'm not 100% sure which log file this is written to, so I'll have you look around a little. Do you have a second computer with Net access available or can you print these instructions?

By the way, are you familiar with DOS commands? I'll try to be a little verbose here. I'll write commands with a command prompt that looks like this: ~>

o Log in as root in text mode.

o Go to the directory with the log files with 'cd':
~> cd /var/log

o Now you can list the files in that directory with the 'ls' command. The flag '-l' gives more detailed file information. Then to avoid the listing to scroll away to fast we send the output to 'more'.
~> ls -l | more
The character between 'ls -l' and 'more' is the pipe character. I don't know where it is on a U.S keyboard, I use a Swedish kbd. Now you should be able to scroll line by line by pressing the return key. You could exit from the listing with the 'q' key.

o I think that the file with the interesting information could be either a file called 'XFree86.setup.log' or possibly one of the 'XFree86.*.log'-files (if there are more than one, look at the most recent one).

o Look in the files with the 'more' command to see if there is anything interesting in it:
~> more XFree86.setup.log

o Now copy the file to a floppy. Insert a DOS formatted floppy in the drive and mount it in your file system with this command:
~> mount /mnt/floppy

o Copy the file(s) you find interesting to your floppy with the 'cp' command:
~> cp XFree86.setup.log /mnt/floppy/

o Before removing the floppy and rebooting the system you need to unmount the floppy from the file system:
~> umount /mnt/floppy

Hope you find some good error messages.

Anybody else has a Radeon card connected to their RedHat-box? I don't, but I think that the instructions I've given should make Sparky able to post the error messages he got.

Then we might need help from someone else to resolve the problem. :cool:

I recommend you visit www.ati.com, search out the Linux graphics driver for the Radeon 9000 series, download it, boot into Linux, copy the downloaded file from your Windows partition (I assume your Windows boot is how you're reading the web) and install the rpm by typing (as root):

rpm -i --force fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.7.0.i386.rpm
You will probably get a warning message. Don't worry about it. This would be a good time to know the horizontal and vertical refresh rate ranges of your monitor. You'll need to know these, as you now run fglrxconfig to configure your X server, and save the output file to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Now exit out of root and startx, hopefully it will work. You'll need a little extra help to get 3d acceleration working, but one step at a time - let's just get X windows working first.

Did that. I installed fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.7.0.i386.rpm using rpm -i --force fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.7.0.i386.rpm. I then ran fglrxconfig and entered my vertical and horizontal rates and answered all the other questions the config asked me. Upon typing startx I get the same error and the exact same error log as above is generated.

Hi again!

We could take a look at your configuration file for X.

First, go to the directory /etc/X11/

Look if you have a file called 'XF86Config-4' and post it here. Otherwise post the file 'XF86Config'. That's basically the same file, but X first tries to use the the '-4' file if it exists.

If this file seems to be broken, then there are a couple of tricks we could try. :)

No, keep the old Subsection "Display" and add a new one as I described, so you will now have two of them: one for depth 24 and one for depth 8. Then set the DefaultDepth to 8 and try to startx.

Ok I managed to get the new config back to its original spot. But same old problem.
