No scandinavian characters in passwords? Huh?

I guess I can't use the characters of my beloved language in passwords. I changed the root password just 5 minutes ago and used "ä" like in any other Finnish word.
Code:
$ su
Password:
Sorry.
$ su
Password:
Sorry.
$ su
Password:
Sorry
$
...
Not funny.

Regards,
Bamse

Maybe the keyboard layouts in X and console are different?
I can't recall any limitations for passwords having to be
7-bit ASCII ...

Cheers,
Tink

Well I closed X and was able to su there at the "real" terminal. I'm still wondering what caused this. How to, maybe, fix?

Regards,
Bamse
