no rule to make target

Hi Friends,

I am trying to make a image for linux kernel 2.6.12.2 which i received from one of the vendor.

I tried to run make menuconfig command after extracting the linux source.i am getting message make: *** "no rule to make target'menuconfig' stop.
I am running the command in the same directory in which i extracted the linux source.

I would appreciate your quick reply.
