no root file system?
 

Trying to install Ubuntu. On step 5 'prepare mount points' I have hda1 for Windows, hda5 'swap', and 2 other partitions - hda2 (9gb) and hda4 (14gb). I tried to select / in the mount point window for hda2 and /home for hda4. The error message is 'No root file system'. I have tried a lot of other things but no joy. Can anyone help - as you can guess, I need absolute newbie instructions please.

The root filesystem is mounted on / -- you may need to define this before selecting the partition to be mounted on /home. Try selecting hda2 as / first, then select hda4 as /home and hda5 for swap. This should definitely work. You probably will have to select these partitions to be formatted with a Linux filesystem (generally ext3 for / and /home and as a swap partition for swap). It's been awhile since I did an Ubuntu install so I don't remember their exact partitioning interface, butyour setup will definitely work.

Thank you for replying. I tried doing what you said, in order, but no luck. Still 'No root file system'. Running 'Paragon Partition Manager' on Windows I checked that the file system was ReiserFS for hda2 and 4 and Linux Swap for hda5 (from a previous Suse 10 installation ?)Is this part of the problem? Should it be ext3?

I had the same thing happen when I tried installing. From what I could find by searching the ubuntu forums it seems like there's a bug where edgy doesn't like installing root on already existing partitions. The fix is to remove the partition and recreate it during the step when the install lets you do partitioning.
