No resolution in openSUSE

Hello everyone... I just did a netbootin install for openSUSE linux and everything went well. I successfully installed, but my screen resolution was too low, and since I saw only one other res (smaller) I made the mistake of trying "no resolution".

Now, I am stuck without being able to use the desktop manager, as it is black. I can switch over to terminal (ALT+CTRL+F1) and I was wondering if I can set my resolution again in the terminal.

Thanks much :)

Hi,

As root type
Xorg -configure

p0ke37 01-02-2009 08:23 AM

Fatal Error?

I typed what you said, and I get an error message in response.

Code:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again

First kill the server
if you use gdm killall gdm or kill -9 gdm
if you use kdm killall kdm or kill -9 kdm

Thank you, the command went through... now all I have to do is reboot and see if it will work.

p0ke37 01-02-2009 08:35 AM

Alright, I rebooted and no luck. I repeated the commands you said... is there a way to get back to graphical user interface without having to reboot? Or do I have to try another fix?

depends, what you are using
as root type gdm or kdm or startx

Does X start?
do you get the login?

As root you might try this.

If you use the command "sax2 -r" as root it will reconfigure your screen. In the process, you may be able to open a custom setting and choose the resolution and refresh rate you need. See of course man sax2 and google for how to the use the command for this function. I have re-installed a mouse this way, but do not remember all the details of the sequence.

And this

It starts up, but the error persists...

cant you login using gnome safelogin?

p0ke37 01-02-2009 09:47 AM

Alright, I just used SaX (cmd: sax2 -r) to change the configuration, I rebooted and I'm waiting for it to boot up... I really hope this works!

p0ke37 01-02-2009 09:52 AM

Shoot, it boots up and does what it normally does: shows the little GNOME mouse loading circle thingy, then turns blank, and I end up switching to console again.

repo, can you please elaborate on what safelogin is?

NOTE: I jsut retried the "sax2 -r" command, and while loading up I see the message
Code:

SaX: SaX does not have access to your display
It ends up starting up SaX, but could that be effecting it?

repo 01-02-2009 09:57 AM

when you arrive at the login screen there are options
You can choose gnome, gnome safe login, kde, xfce .....

repo 01-02-2009 10:00 AM

it's failsafe gnome

If there is another GUI xfce .... you can start these and try to start the gnome settingmanager from there
