no prompt in terminal

I'm using the RH9.0. After recompiling the kernel to 2.4.22, all things seems well except that when i login as a normal user, I get no prompt in the gnome-terminal. And whatever i type in, it does not function, just leaving me blank. Surprisingly, it works all right if i log in as root.
Any hints to solve the problem?
Thanks
