No Network Manger Display in Debian Squeeze
 

Hi guys,

Another noob question i guess, i've installed debian squeeze on an old laptop i have but unlike ubuntu, theres no network manager icon :S

When i use ubuntu i just right click on the network manager icon to set up my mobile broadband connection but with Debian i cant (because there's no applet) . Is there any way to make the network applet appear so i can do that ?

Hello,

Can you verify that NetworkManager is installed? If it is, and you don't see your icon in the tray, you just might need to enable the NetworkManager service. Also, have a look here - http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkManager
You may need to manually define what interfaces you want to be managed by NetworkManager.

there have been problem with that util in Debian for a long time. esp if you use static IP instead of DHCP.
perhaps it would be better to make a script or something to change settings.

btw, have you checked its installed?

edit: I've just checked, debian_testing here has some 'wicd' program along with net manager. I think it does the same thing. perhaps try that one?

Yes, that is correct. I honestly prefer NetworkManager better, but some people prefer wicd. Maybe the OP could try it out and let us know if he/she likes it better?

So i've tried and tried for a while now but i cant seem to get connected to the internet. (kinda good cause ive learnt alot already though :P )

What i've tried.

1. I got Debian Squeeze.... the first CD.
2. I realized network manager wasnt installed.
3. I knew that if i wanted to compile the network manager from source id need an internet connection (which i dont have)
4. Then realized i needed gcc to compile.
5. Downloaded gcc to another computer and then transferred it over to Squeeze, but wont compile cause i dont have gcc !!
6. Google and google ..........
7. Chrooted the debian system with fedora connected to the internet so ran
8. apt-get install gcc
9. Fedora crashed !

Because at the moment i only have mobile broadband which is crap ! i didnt want to download all the 4.4gigs for the full debian DVD. Does anyone know what cd the network manager is on and maybe i can just install those two cd's and finally get going. I dont really want to go to Ubuntu

I'm really stuck guys, been trying at this for hours and have googled my backside off. Anyone have any ideas.

Hello, i can't help your problem as i have the dvds and not the single cd, but i'll just give you a heads up on wicd, if you consider it as some other people suggest. First of all, i have no experience with wicd, so others correct me if i'm wrong on this; but you say that you use mobile broadband, well i'm pretty sure wicd doesn't currently support mobile broadband.
On a side note, I use Slackware and have used slackbuilds to compile network manager so i can use my mobile broadband and it is a bit of a prick; it has three main parts, network manager, network manager applet, and modem manager. Network manager applet has a heap of dependencies, (if you are using gnome though, you may already have some of those).

see if it's part of the first cd you may have to do expert install to enable.
Also you can see if the network is detected during installation.

I experienced a similar problem a couple of weeks ago. I installed Debian Squeeze from a CD and during the installation process I did not choose to fetch the latest updates and install them. So only what was on the CD got installed. Several things were missing and I had to do some tweaking to get the system in a "workable" state. E.g. not only was the Network Manager missing but I couldn't also use Synaptic. There were some authentication issues that had to be solved. Basically every GUI application that needed 'root' authentication did not start. So the problem did go much deeper than just a missing applet.
Unfortunately, I do not recall all the steps that I took to correct that behavior. But it was a real pain.
So at this point the simplest solution is to reinstall with an active iNet connection and have the installer fetch the latest packages during that install. Alternatively you might want to use the installation DVD instead of the CD.
If you do a reinstall then do not forget to make a backup if you already have some valuable data stored.
