no network card in recompiled kernel 2.4.26

Hi

I am running Debian Woody 3.0 which had kernel 2.2.20-idepci loaded. This was after a fresh install. I have since managed to recompile the kernel to version 2.4.26. Now that I have done this I seem to have lost my network card. After reading on the net it seems pretty easy to fix...just recompile with the right drivers loaded. How do I find out which driver modules to load. I've managed to boot up in kernel 2.2.20 again and had a look at my /proc/modules file...it only displayed the following

nls_cp437 3896 2 (autoclean)
af_packet 6136 1
parport_pc 7276 1 (autoclean)
lp 4580 0 (autoclean)
parport 6676 1 (autoclean) [parport_pc lp]

Can anybody please point me in the right direction. I've also heard that I should maybe try and install the standard debian kernel-image-2.4.26...but how, since apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.26 says that I already have the latest version.....

Google for your particular make and model of ethernet card, and you should be able to discover what option to compile into the kernel. Also, is it possible you have the module for your card compiled, and you just need to modprobe it?
