No mouse.....

I just installed Slack9 [previously using mandrake with no mouse problems] and my mouse will not work. The mouse is a a USB mouse with a PS/2 adapter. I have tried many different mouse settings in xf86config but it will not work. When I load X, the cursor just sits in the middle of the screen.

Any ideas?
