No Login prompt

I am using linux Redhat 8.0.

Today I am unable to telnet to my
linux server. I get the usual kernal banner but no login prompt.

I can't even telnet to local host ( 127.0.0.1)

all i get is:
[root@server root]# telnet localhost
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
Red Hat Linux release 8.0 (Psyche)
Kernel 2.4.18-14 on an i686

It was working fine yesterday.

Someone please help?

Why are you using such an outdated, inherently flawed and insecure, and long-been-replaced program/protocol to log into your server?

Hello and welcome to linux questions.

In my experience these sorts of things are because of a badly configured hosts file or messed up dns settings. Check those, others may have other ideas.

Also why telnet? Horribly insecure, ssh is a much much better alternative.
