I mounted the image and ran the following:

rpm -i kernel-smp-2.6.12.12mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

The result was:

[root@alpha main]# rpm -i kernel-smp-2.6.12.12mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm
package kernel-smp-2.6.12.12mdk-1-1mdk is already installed

[root@alpha main]#

I'll got for the other option of compiling a new kernel. If it breaks, I can always download a new version of Linux and start from scratch.
