No internet connection

I've recently installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my Gateway 7422GX notebook. I've already enabled the restricted driver for my Broadcom 4306 wifi card. It now shows in the network connections that I am connected to the wireless access point that I'm trying to connect to and I'm getting a signal. When I pull up the ifconfig in the terminal window, it shows that there has been data transfer between the two. When I actually try to open Firefox browser, it says that it can't connect to the server. I'm at a loss...please help

In Firefox, try Edit - Preferences - General tab. At the bottom on the right, chlick on Connection Settings. Then select Direct Connection to internet. See if that helps.

Sorry I can't offer a serious technical answer, but I often have the same problem when I try to use Firefox (not on wifi, mind) and get the message you mention.

The answer - at least in my case - is really simple. I just go to the connections short-cut on the menu bar and click on the wired network radio button.

Firefox works fine after that.
