no icons appearing on linux lite desktop

Acer Aspire One came installed with linux lite.

In trying to install Cisco VPN I installed Synaptic (as many forums posts suggested it would make life easier). After installation of Synaptic it told me I have broken something-or-other. I did a repair as Synaptic suggested, and that has now totally screwed my desktop.

The netbook boots up OK, loads the desktop toolbar, but no icons, and when I click on Home I get an error about xfdesktop2 not found.
(Could not run command: xfdesktop2 --gohome: Failed to execute child process "xfdesktop2" (No such file or directory)).
I can't see a way to fix this as I cannot load a terminal to install the missing files. I looked at doing a system recovery, but netbooks don't have CD-ROMs and I don't have a USB CD-ROM I can use. Is there some kind of boot in dos mode like windows has that I can use?

HELP!

Seems that during repair Synaptic uninstalled something, named xfdesktop2. Now you should install it back. To do it you can switch in console mode by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2 (to switch back from console to graphics use Alt-F7).

And in future you should allways carefully study each action system proposes to you, and save all the logs of such actions, to trace errors back.

Resolved

Thanks for the responses. I eventually used a recovery image to reset to factory defaults using instructions on the link below.
