No GUI after update Fedora 20 and GeFroce 660 (NVidia) Card, but without installing

No GUI after update Fedora 20 and GeFroce 660 (PNY GeForce GTX 660 XLR8) Card, but without installing I can use my machine for a little while but then out of no where both monitors start pixelating or something as they both freak out and neither is usable causing me to have to restart and lose everything I have open. I have already tried everything I know and every time I try different drivers I end up having to re-image my machine to get the display to work again!

Do i need to return this graphics card or should i try a different distro other than Fedora? I hate to go back to windows but I feel like I wouldn't be having all these problems if I did (and my wife wouldn't keep saying "I told you so".

Put SystemRescueCD on a USB stick, boot from it, see if the problem is still there. You can run startx from prompt and see if Xorg works, too.

you might want to read the guide for installing the nvidia driver on the Fedoraforum

Mr. John,
I did follow those instructions from the last time I got them from you but because I have the GeForce GTX660 I have tried steps for
"GeForce 8, 9, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 & 700 series cards"
as well as
"GeForce 6, 7 series cards"
and both put me back to booting to blank screens. It looks like my card the 660 is not supported. Looks like I will have to wait until payday to go back to Frys and get a different card. I just hope by then I can still return this one! This is very frustrating as I thought most everything would work with Linux; I've always heard with linux things just work.

From:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li...rtedchips.html
GeForce GTX 680 0x1180 D
GeForce GTX 690 0x1188 D
GeForce GTX 670 0x1189 D
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 0x1200 C
GeForce GTX 560 0x1201 C

The worst part is every time I try one of these I end up having to re-image my box to get this back working right.

Mr. Emerson,
I can use Ctrl+Alt+f2 to open a terminal from the blank screen and from there when I tried startx I go right back to the blank screens.

you do not have a almost antique gforce 6 card
you have a NEW gtx 600

that should never be needed

fedora installs the default Nouveau driver
that will do most 3d and all 2d graphics on a nvidia card

that should work just fine for 99% of the people
and that 99% should not need to ever replace it

now

if you REPLACE the default installed nouveau driver with the nvidia.run driver
THEN you will need to rebuild JUST the very small "boot image"
( using the dracut command )

for your card
all you have to do is this

update the install
Code:
su -

yum update

reboot
then after rebooting install the repo that has the akmod driver

Code:
su -

yum --nogpgcheck install http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

yum install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686

reboot
and that is it
you do not have to reinstall the operating system from a back up OLD!!!!!!!! image

John

I don't do any gaming or anything that would require me to change anything if it was working normally. The problem I have is that the screens go crazy from time to time. What I mean by that is all of a sudden I get lines and colors all over the place starting on one window then on anything I click on until both monitors are unreadable. This is causing me to lose my work and as a college student (again) this is causing me problems.

I've checked to make sure all my connections are tight and I've even re-seated the card to ensure the connection is good. If not the drivers I wonder what it could be?

When I try the install of the NVidia Drivers I get nothing as far as a GUI that is when I have to re-install my OS.

I couldn't help myself and I went ahead and tried the above again and of course it booted to blank screens (well black screen with a bunch of stuff on it but then wouldn't move) so I ran "yum remove akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686" to undo it and now my resolution is way off. How can I put this back like it was?

What you really want to look at is Xorg log.

New card

I've pulled this card out and am going to return it to Frys. What is a good working graphics card that I can buy that will support three 24" monitors?

any newish 600 or 700 card ,like your GTX 660
will handle 3 monitors

but YOU have to set up the dual monitor in the xorg.conf

and you never posted what you set up

and we have not seen your xorg.0.log
any errors will be in there

and if you are using the Akmod-nvidia.rpm
you need to set it up in the "nvidia-settings" gui tool
( basically the same kind of tool used in MS windows )

but the errors in the xorg log will tell the story

also are you using two dvi cables or two VGA cables
( or hdmi cables )

you also might have ran into this bug ?
-- maybe ?-

well if you did not uninstall it then you have your /etc/X11/xorg.config that is still set to load the nvidia blob thats not there.
and that means your /etc/modprobe.d/still has a blacklist of Nouveau driver so it doesn't load.

Now I am not sure if F20 has different places put these files don't really care.
the thing is to uninstall the nvidia driver. so the the xorg is set back to default.
or install the nvidia driver for it.
Yum away I guess is the F20 way. or sh Nvidia.run

I downloaded there live cd and boot it from grub2 I find that F20 needs some work not very polished. But that's a testing distro. And a Live cd.
wish you luck.
