No desktop after installing Umbunto 7.10

Hello:

I'm updating my Inspiron 3800, and have added a significantly larger HDD. after checking that my BIOS were up to date, one of my first tasks was to install Umbunto (sp?) 7.10. Following the directions provided on the disk, I installed the operating system. However, when I removed the disk and booted from the HDD, I got some sounds but just a clear screen, although in a pleasant earth tone.

Can anyone suggest what went wrong?

Fred

Did it come preinstalled from Dell? My guess is that maybe they had some extra setup or proprietary drivers that they preinstalled, and when you reinstalled, they weren't set up by default.

Or maybe you just need to change your refresh rate in your xorg.conf - maybe it's using a video mode your monitor can't use at that refresh rate. It might be worth a shot to hook up both drives (at least temporarily - if you've got another drive port open) and then use KNOPPIX or the Ubuntu LiveCD to just straight copy your /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the original drive to the new one. If doing this gives you errors when you start Ubuntu again, look at what the error says and it'll probably give some hint of what's wrong.

If you got it from Dell preinstalled with Ubuntu, you might want to try calling them - they might be able to tell you if there's something special you need to do.
