I get a message "no cc found in $path." This happens when I am trying to download GCC 4.0.0. There is a makefile.in and I have read I have to type in "./configure" and then "make" or "make all". I am using Suse 9.2 for linux. Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated!

i think gcc3 is aliased to gcc , cc, and other alias. Installing it is your best bet.

Thanks for your suggestion...Do I need to download developer tools? I read something about this on another site. Also Do I have to download cc seperately or is it inculded in Gcc3? Thanks.

I'd first check if i have gcc installed or not. You can do this so:
If you have gcc, then whereis will return the absolute path to it. If you have gcc, then go to ~/ and open .bash_profile. Add this line to the file:
when you finish run this command:
Next log in as root and make the same changes. If you have gcc installed, you will probably now be able to upgrade to ver 4.0

But if you haven't no gcc on your machine, then i hardly imagine you will be able to compile anything, since gcc is the compiler, this means nothing can be installed from source on your machine. You can find rpm package of gcc and try to install it or you will have to reinstall linux together with gcc.

get the packages you need from either a suse ftp mirror (get the packages for your distro, don't go out and get some random packages) or your install cd's/dvd. use Yast to install them, note that to compile applications a compiler by itself won't help you, you need to install a development environment. (this is an opinion) I'd stick with gcc-3.x for now.
