No Carrier return when dialing up

Ive got a PCTEL modem on my Dell I8200 Laptop

Ive followed the direction on installing the modem and setting it up from many different sites. Im running 2.4.22 kernel with fedora core 1

However, when i try to dial up using wvdial or kppp i get a no carrier when it uses the ATDT command to dial the number...

can anyone help me? =)

sounds like a simple dialtone issue.... can you get to a dialup terminal and type ATDT then hit enter.... you should here a dialtone.

nope no dial tone =\

and when i query the modem in KPPP it dosnt return any ATIs

im thinking about buying a PCMCIA modem card to use while im in linux

also, have you run a search on this site for PCTEL... I hate to say it, but I think those are problematic in Linux...

either way, it sounds like the lack of dialtone is a result of the modem not being initialized properly, not a physical "no dialtone" issue... I'd suggest buying a cheap USR or 3com... it will more than pay for itself in the long run, and you can pick one up on ebay for super cheap ($10-15$)
