NO Boot Mandrake Windows XP

Installed Mandrake 10.0 on to a 80 gig harddrive with Windows Xp already installed on 3 seperate partions. The Linux partition, Lilo and OS installation seemed to go fine. I believe I put the MBR in the right place but the problem is when the machine boots, only the the letter L appears and then the system hangs with no reference to XP. I cannot boot into windows with the windows cd "error message" "NTLDR is missing". I can boot with the Mandrake Cd but only to the point of another installatin so...while using the rescue options I found what seems to be an error message with Mandrake making sence of the geometry of the harddrive. I have no problem losing the Linux partition because no personal data is on it, but I would really like to save my XP partiontions and data. I believe the problem is like the linux error reported ...the correct size of the drive is not being read correctly and the MBR is not in the right sector. This is my opinion.

The MBR cannot be in the wrong sector, as it is in fact a sector (the first of the primary drive). I didn't quite understand the error message from your description. If you have a Windows/DOS boot floppy, you could:
Code:
fdisk /mbr
and then try again with the Mandrake installation. Alternatively, if you had a Live Linux CD (like Knoppix, Gentoo, SuSE or something), you could try to boot it and look for the lilo configuration file, to see if the problem is there. Finally, you could try installing Mandrake again, overwriting the previous installation.

BTW, you should always make a back up of your files when you do something like this. I've never once had a problem like this with Linux installations, but it is apparently quite common.

Thanks for the reply Milos, what I was referring to was that Linux could not make sence of the geometry of the harddrive a better explaination is here http://www.ata-atapi.com/hiwmbr.htm . I have tried the fix /mbr from a windows boot disk which did not work I also tried a reinstall of Mandrake changed the boot loader to Grub but same problem only the letter G appears. I will try however looking at the Li Lo config file. Any other ideas please let me know. Thanks again

Hi all,

I have experienced the exact same problem. My WinXP+Mandrake 10.0 laptop hangs with an L or a G during initial stages of boot sequence. I've tryed to reinstall Mandrake but that did not help. My WinXP CD does not boot and my computer is now more or less dead. It can't boot up anything.

I've even tryed to install W2k on the parts that Linux used to occupy, but the won't boot either.

I'm at a complete loss for what to do. Could someone please tell me how to proceed? How can I use e.g. Knoppix to solve this problem? I've tryed it , but for some reason all drives are read only and I can't make any changes to lilo.conf etc.

Regards,
Erik
