Nmap help, total newblet from space.
 
I managed to install Nmap ( the port scanner ) on my mandrake linux 10.0 community machine using RPM, but now i'm feeling pretty stupid because I don't know how to start it, I found the program in /usr/bin/nmap but clicking it doesn't seem to do anything... Typing "/usr/bin/nmap" in the command prompt brings up a text based thing, Is there a graphical interface for Nmap or is that it?

Nmap proper is a command line only tool. There's a graphical front-end for it called xnmap; you should probably see if it's installed on your system. Nonetheless, you should learn how to use the command line features. I suggest reading the man pages and checking out the documentation at www.insecure.org/nmap for more details.

this thread is really old but I thought I'd reply anyway since I have been having the same problem - could start nmap but only in text mode so I installed nmap-gtk which is supposed to be a graphic front end but couldn't start it!

After alot of googling I found a French site ( http://www.alionet.org/lofiversion/index.php/t1706.html) which says to type "nmapfe" (presumably nmap front end), as root

It works!
