May sound silly but pls bear with me

Does Redhat support NIS+ server

I'm trying to find a relevant document, but only get NIS and not NIS+

while searching i found this link http://www.linux-nis.org/nisplus/
here it says
"There is no NIS+ server for Linux and it doesn't look like that there will ever be one." but its date is quite old

Can anyone let me know and if possible give me a link for the config setup.

Not that I know of, client only I'm afraid.

I have heard of someone running a minimum install Solaris virtualised on a Linux XEN box but I can't quite see the point. For the overhead you might as well just use Solaris itself.....

Why the need for NIS+ ?

Which features does it offer that NIS or LDAP wouldn't?

ldap is very good but not a requirement as of now.
as far as my reading on NIS, its passes data unencrypted

Yah. But on a corporate LAN (switched environment) that shouldn't
be too much of a risk, unless you have untrusted network admins
or people with root privileges on the server who you don't trust.

How big is the risk of passing the data on the LAN for you?

Of course, encryption *IS* the preferred option, and LDAPS would
cover that nicely.

NIS+ has been phased out in most if not all of its users.

LDAP is definitely recommended as a replacement for large (or smaller) organizations.

So can i conclude Redhat does not support NIS+ server ?

I tend to believe it doesn't support NIS+ as a server but you may want to ask it on the Red Hat forum.
