Nikon DSL 3100 camera

Shotwell cannot unlock for download of pictures.ls an external
Card reader the best option and do they all work.
Ubuntu 14.04

I use Digicam for my Nikon D40. Digicam will work for both an internal card reader and a USB cable to my camera.

I used to use shotwell. As I remember it shotwell worked for cards but it would not work with a USB cable attached to a Canon model that I owned. I don't remember the model number of the Canon camera which did not work.

Usually the issue I've had is the camera gets recognised (and mounted) prior to shotwell getting the chance. Simply umount it and try again.
I use cheap multi-card readers to load my D7000 without issue - although it's been a while since I used shotwell.
