nic/dhcp configuration

Hi all

I have SuSE 8.2 set up on a dual boot machine with Win doze XP. Linux on 40GB and XP on 120GB. The mobo is Nvidia with onboard nic.

Access to the web is via a second machine on which Linux Smoothwall 1.0 operates as firewall and then connects to adsl modem.

In XP connection is fine. But in Linux I can't connect to the web at all nor can I access the second machine. No ping etc,.

On a verbose boot of Linux the nic is recognised as eth0 but fails to get ip address and from memory says the process will continue in the background.

I am confused with why the nic doesn't connect. I have set up Linux via the dhcp configuration.

I have updated all the Nvidia drivers with the latest versions and have trolled many a forum site to try to resolve this and would be grateful for any and all help.

Cheers

have you tried to set the IP manually?

if you havent try that.. if it still doesnt work then you can right off that its the DHCP

Perhaps you have not set up your Firewall to allow requests etc from that particular machine???

I realise im not HELPING so to speak but maybe helping in eliminating some options

Hi Chrisfirestar

Thanx for the information.

I have tried to manually configure the ip address/default gateway and mask....but to no avail.

As far as the machine not being recognised goes it is the same machine for both OS's just on different hd's and XP doesn't have any problems. So the firewall shouldn't be the problem unless Linux uses different ports??

Where can I check that the Eth0 connection has been mounted??

Grateful for any help

Humvee

ifconfig would be the easiest way

and to get more info out of the ifconfig type: man ifconfig
maybe something in there may help
