NIC configuration - Internet through proxy server not working

Hi,

I am trying to setup my PC at the computer lab in college, and i could really use some help!

The PC runs BOSS Linux(its a debian based distribution). I am trying to configure and internet connection through a proxy server.
The computer is a :HP Compaq dx6210MT
Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5751 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 01)

I am using Gnome(2.20.3) and have setup the proxy server under network proxy (System>Preference>Network Proxy).

Have assigned the static IP in System>Administration>Network and enabled the connection

I have also configured Iceweasel 3's network proxy setup (Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Network>(Connection)Settings)

I have the host name setup just as it is in the windows systems in the rest of the lab.

The only IP iam able to ping is loopback, everything else gives me Destination host unreachable.

The system has firestarter installed, i have tried disabling it and that didnt help either.

Help!!!

A least I made a lot of money in a few minutes just because a graphical administration tool for firewall was not functionning correctly. So, do you want to be sure, you don't have any firewall rules in action ?
In the affirmative, open a console windows and type iptables -nL

you probably have in your /etc/init.d something called firewall, service firewall stop, iptables -nL again

Try your connection now ...

I suggest you to verify your network settings with ping, traceroute, tracepath, route -n, may be you have something wrong.

Have a look into your /etc/resolv.conf

I have disabled the firewall(#/etc/init.d/firestarter stop), the output for iptables -nL is a lot shorter with the firewall off. Internet still doesnt work though.
/etc/resolv.conf has loopback IP in it.
We static IP setup in the Lab.

based on what google tells me i need tg3 module as the driver fot this NIC, lsmod shows up with a list containing tg3, so i suppose the driver is working?

is there a way i could check if the NIC is active and the network is up.
