Talking NIC card question

Folks;
I have 2 NIC cards on my SUSE Linux server. One of them was reporting receive errors for a while now it's OK, but i'd like to monitor it.

Is there any command i can run to tell me the usage in the past or give me a history of traffic and the speed that going on this specific card?

I need to get details from this NIC card so i can see how is it behaving.
i use ifconfig eth0 but this only give me the total packets, errors, etc with noth from the past

Also; Is there any command to tell me bandwidth usage on that card?

Thanks in advance

Not sure about "bandwidth" specifically, but you could set up one or two simple iptables rules for that route, and log the traffic if you like as well.

Once iptables is filtering the route, you can use `iptables -L` if I remember right, to dump statistics, perhaps filtering the output through a grep or something to grab the info you want. This will show you how much traffic/packets have traversed the route.

If there's another/better way, I either don't know it, or have forgotten about it

Aww, heck one must do a *little* bit for oneself -- read through the above link first. It's an excellent iptables instructional.

Then, try coming up with a simple filter rule(s) for yourself, to just allow all traffic from anywhere to anywhere via the interface in question.

Post your rule(s) here, and someone will help you make it right if it isn't.

Cheers!

PS - Maybe a few hints are in order, since you're new

The table you'll be using is the 'filter' table.
The target will be 'ACCEPT' with an optional initial identical rule with a target of 'LOG' if you want to log it all.
Protocol and port is irrelevant -- you want to monitor all traffic, after all.
The interface of the input & output (-i and -o) will be eth0

There. This should get you started faster.
