newstracker/rss-reader
 

When I had windows, i used winbar (winbar.nl) and it's newstracker funktion. The newstracker was only a rss-reader, which reportet whenever the rss-file was updated.

isn't there a similar program for linux ?

Since I have no idea what your tool in Windows
does/looks like and I have no intention to install
the evil OS just to give you advice ... :}

Have you looked at
http://freshmeat.net and done a search for rss?
