Hi,

I have recently installed Desktop Ubuntu 14.04 on my HP Proliant server N40L on to a 60gb SSD Drive. Once installed, I turned server off, inserted 4 various HDDs into the bays, turned Server on. Drives are recognised as I can see them on the left panel (Launcher?) but cannot open them. When I use files to access them, it give me the message:

Unable to access "NAME"
Error mounting/dev/sdb1 at /media/....
..
Metadata kept in windows cache, refused to mount.
Failed to mount'/dev/sdb1': Operation not permitted
The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state etc..

I've spent a few hours trying to read up on various commands to fix this, TBH, I'm really not good at this. I was hoping to use Ubuntu as a free lightweight OS on my server and just be able to access pre created content on my HDDs via the Network through Plex Media Server. I really don't want to go back to Windows, but I also don't want to learn a computing language to use an OS.

Are there pre-written scripts in executable files that I can use instead of having to write code in Terminal? Does anyone know if there is a fix to get my NTFS HDD's to work in Ubuntu?

What was the origin of the drives? Is there data on the drives that you need to keep? The unsafe state warning is typically caused by windows not shutting down properly or a trying to mount a windows 8 disk. Windows 8 default fast boot mode does not perform a real shutdown so it leave the file system in an unsafe state.

If there is nothing on the drives you want to keep then I suggest just reformatting them using a linux file system type. If it is a windows 8 drive and there is data you want to keep you can mount the drive as read only and copy the data. Then again I would suggest formatting using a linux file system. Otherwise if it isn't a W8 disk you can try running ntfsfix to try to fix sdb1. Mounting as read only and copying important data would also be a good idea.
