Newest/Best version of Linux, newbie here

My friend told me to go with Fedora 2... I hear of Mandrake 10... and then I see Red Hat about... I'm just confused on which to go with? Which is the newest? Which is the most promising? Which is used for what? lol ^^;

they will all do you just fine, but please search this site, as countless numbers of people ask this question each day without searching to find the opinions that already exist here.

I use SuSE 9.1 and I like it so far. Mandrake is good too. So is Red Hat... in all honesty I don't have a favorite but SuSE has done all I've asked it to, SuSE 7.3 had problems (which is the last version I had from them) but resolved in 9.1. So that's my opinion.

Well, I would go with SuSE 9.1 pro. Personal doesn't get you your compilers and whatnot, but damn is it ever user friendly.

personally, i use SuSE and slackware...SuSE is my distro of choice.
