Hello-

Finally got RedHat 7.0 Installed on my WinME machine with the hopes of having a dual boot machine. The only way for me to load Linux however, is to use the boot disk. I am never given the option of which os to load. It just loads WinME. Also, when I do boot Linux, it is not in graphical mode. All I see is the command line and I must admit it is a little daunting for a newbie such as myself. How do I get the graphical interface happening? I could have sworn I installed GNOME and KDE. I originally created 3 partitions for Linux. /boot for my boot info, / as my root partition (Is this like C in Win) and /swap at about 100MB. I have partition magic 6.0 but don't know which partitions should be primary vs logical etc. Have I bitten off more than I can chew? At this point I'll do just about anything to get away from Windows especially that XP piece of crap. Anyway, if I can offer any more info I'd be happy to. Thanks to everyone.

To start x windows, after you log in, run the command "startx" at the commandline and that wud start X-Windows.
Personally my experience with X hasn't been good. At one time I screwed up my X-configuration file - X windows wudn't work - and I wasn't even able to login since I enabled graphical login. I now run X but prefer to start it manually after I log in through character mode.
The first time you start X windows it takes you to the desktop that you defined as the default during installation. If you look around enough once you get into one of the desktop environments you will find the options to enable graphical login and to switch from one desktop to another....
As for LILO is concerned... Iam not very clear abut it myself and wudn't want to give you any wrong info.

When I had Linux-Mandrake 6.5 Also wouldn't boot unless from a floppy. The reason for this is because my hard drive was 13 GB and my Mandrake partition was on the last 3 GB, and for this distribution, Mandrake did not support hard drives over 8 GB (I think). See info on the "1024 cylinder limit".

Problem is that if the Linux boot sector is AFTER the 1024 cylinder on your hard drive, you can't use LILO.

This problem was fixed by upgrading my Linux distribution (now have Mandrake 8.0). Linux now supports the larger hard drives.

use linuxconf to install lilo on the mbr
lilo default: /dev/hda
use Xconfigurator for xstart auto

Usually if you edit then run /sbin/lilo after editing your /etc/lilo.conf, it should install it in your MBR.
Also, don't forget to configure to load Windows when editing this file.

If u got Partition Magic, I hope u got Boot Magic as well.
With it its easy to define what OS'es u wanna start up.
If this is not an option its possible to have Linux boot from WinME, even from the desktop...
