Unhappy Newbie with Knoppix 3.2 need help.

hi, i am interested in linux, and read from somewhere that knoppix is easy for a newbie to start with. i have burnt a copy of the latest knoppix 3.2 and tried booting up. it did boot up, after initialising the hardwares, there's a sound played, "starting initialising" or something like that, after a while, it stopped. no HDD/CD activities and i was left with a wallpaper screen with a cursor. did i miss out something? pls help.

i'm currently running on PIII 550MHz, 384MB RAM, Abit BE6 mobo, TNT2 16MB VGA & OEM Soundcard. the hardwares initialisation seems okay from the log on the screen when it boots up.

Talking

i believe i know what you're talking about. i ran into the same thing the first time i tried to use knoppix, when you get the flashing cursor doesit say "boot:" before it? if it does all you really need to do is type in "knoppix desktop=kde" and it will bring upi into the actual user interface there are other options the help menu will show you all those.

hope that helps!!

I'm not quite sure where you would of read knoppix is easy for a newbie. But they probably meant easy to install i use knoppix more for troubleshooting if your looking for a desktop os i would point you torwards Mandrake 9.1 or Redhat 8.0 - 9.0. There more for your hardrive.

well, i got it to boot up successfully but not with kde (still get empty screen), instead i loaded icewm, but when i try to run mozilla, it didn't popup, waited for pretty long time. i'm running it from the CDROM for now. Thanks.

I too have the same version of Knoppix - works fine. However i too had problems with some other versions similar to yours.

It could be that there were problems copying/downloading which corrupted the kdm files. This is why you can boot with icewm.

Sometimes it hangs because it does not recognise the video card correctly.

Type knoppix two at the prompt.

You will end up at another prompt and you can read what knoppix supposedly detected viz your card and stuff. Read it.
Is that the card you have?

From here type startx

See what happens.....................
