Newbie wants to install Linux.. but wich distribution?! :o

Hey, im running a Live CD of linux (Slax) and im starting to like it :)
so i would like to get linux onto my harddisk..
But my pc is kind of old :P
its a:
P3 450Mhz
128MB Ram memory
12,5GB, 5GB free atm..

But i also need Windows.. so i want to make a dual boot

What would be a good distribution ?!
What i want to do on linux:
- Run Apache, PHP and MySQL
- go on IRC
- Code..

or would it be better to get a bigger Harddisk & Ram.. :)

could you help this :newbie: ?? :p

If Slax ran fine and you liked it, go with Slackware, Archlinux or Vectorlinux. You could also look at DamnSmallLinux, PuppyLinux or FeatherLinux.

Welcome to LQ :D

slackware would run great on that. just avoid gnome and kde.

Thnx :D

but i do want to run a graphical interface on it..
does this come with Slackware? ^_^

Yes, Slackware comes with X.org and several window managers and desktop environments (Fluxbox, Blackbox, XFCE, KDE are the ones I can remember, as well as TWM).

yes, the graphical part is the X Window system, and when you have X, you can run the other gui packages: gnome, kde, xfce, etc. it all comes with slackware. but you can just install X and something very light like fluxbox, windowmaker, icewm, etc. and not have to use the big (some would say bloated :D) environments like kde/gnome. xfce4 is a good compromise between the big desktops and the smaller window managers. that might be a good choice.

LiveCD is SLOWWWWWW---no matter what SW you are running. Once you know what distro you like, then you should go ahead and install on the HD.

Applications don't depend on KDE, Gnome, etc. per se. They depend on certain library functions--which may also be part of a full KDE or Gnome install.

My current favorite distro for learning this kind of thing is ArchLinux. You start with a bare-bones system, and then add only what you want. When you add something is shows all the dependencies and adds them as well. Very nice, user-friendly package manager--all CLI

i ran slackware on a 500mhz pIII and used fluxbox as my window manager...it ran great...

Does anyone know a tutorial or something how to install Slackware next to a existing Windows 98SE installation? :)
