Newbie - SUSE 9.2 Pro

OK I'm a total Linux newbie and as such purchased a boxed distribution of SUSE 9.2 Pro based on various recommendations and the amount of software supplied with it, particularly math packages like Scilab (I'm an engineer).

Anyway I've installed it off the DVD and followed the suggested settings due to my inexperience. It appears to have worked because when I reboot I get a SUSE boot option screen that allows me to go to my Win XP installation with no problems.

However when I go to SUSE 9.2 the screen says it's installing various services but then it appears to cut the monitor and I get the sound of static you get from a monitor when you switch it off.

In addition I can't seem to access my dial-up net connection from XP.

Any general pointers as to what is going on.

Thanks in advance.

Ben

You chose the wrong graphics settings. On install, at the bottom of the screen you can choose the display resolution. Pick a conservative one if you aren't sure. And configure your monitor/video card resolution properly during the install.

Does a login prompt appear?
If so you can log on as root there.
If not you can try the failsafe option at boot.
If you can log in as the root user (user = root, pass = what you chose during install) type "yast" (no quotes) at the prompt. This will get you into the text version of the Suse configuration tool. You can redo settings from there.
Posting you video card or chipset type could get you further tips.
