Newbie setup for home server

Hello. I am a linux newbie. I have a home network, using a linksys wireless router (using both wired and wireless access) that is connected to a cable modem. I would like to create a server to put all of my files on and I think a linux box would be best. I have never done this before so I need some baby steps. I have talked to a friend and he recommended using Mandrake 10 so I will be using that distro.

All of the other computers besides the server will be running either Windows XP pro or home. I want to be able to see the files in each computer in an explorer view. I would also like for one person to be able to access the server away from home.

Can someone please give me some baby steps in installing and setting up this? Thanks

well the best thing to do is to plug the cd in and when you get stuck _then_ come back and ask advice, that is AFTER you have done a google search to see if anyone else has had your problem before (which in all likelyness they will have).
